A general survey of dramatic literature from ancient Greece to the beginnings of the modern movement, with emphasis on the changing conventions, techniques, and purposes of playwriting. The graduate section requires an extended reading list and more theoretical discussion; the undergraduate section confines itself to close reading and study of eight selected plays. Required course.
